The Shiv Textiles business is extremely localised- they only work with UK-based companies, and their manufacturing and workshopping processes are both local to Brighton. They offset their carbon footprint by supporting tree-planting programmes through Ecologi, a company which aids individuals and businesses in making impactful climate decisions.
The cushion’s inners are made to order by a family-run business just outside of London. Any deadstock which is collected and not used is also donated to the textiles department at the University of Brighton. Most scraps are used for smaller projects, such as coasters and other accessories. Collections of deadstock are small, and often upcycled materials from British mills and dye factories. These materials are of a mixture of natural fibres which are Global Organic Textiles Standard (GOTS) and Responsible Wool Standard (RWS) certified. This means the materials used are biodegradable, made from at least 70% organic fibres, ethically and socially fair, and sourced from responsible and well-managed places.
Shiv Textiles offers frequent workshops in Brighton, where the public can learn the art of weaving. They also offer university students flexible work placements, where they can develop the relevant skills in an industry setting.
