John Eadon Avon Lounge Chair

£3,850.00

Taking inspiration from traditional Windsor chairs and mid-century design, this lounge chair combines the essential elements into a flowing and connected form with a very comfortable, relaxed and supported seating position, once described wonderfully as capturing the perfect poise and position of a rocking chair mid rock.

The chair is made to order in 12 weeks time.

Description

As with traditional Windsor chairs, the seat is carved from solid Elm which naturally resists splitting, and the steam bent arm and spindles are in Ash which steam bends well and has a natural spring.

A prototype jig of this chair was made with a number of adjustable elements including seat height and angle, angle of back rest, curve of armrests and bend of back support spindles. On and off over a period of 5 years, this prototype was tested with as wide a range of body types and sizes as possible to find that mythical perfect for everybody. The result is a chair with interesting curves and dynamics which may not appear to make sense at first sight but work together to create a very comfortable chair.

The continuous armrest and back is steam bent and shaped from one continuous length of Ash nearly 3 metres long. It bends in multiple planes to produce a curve which allows elbow room in the armrests whilst bringing the tops of the spindles forward in their curve maintaining the head position. The reclined and sculpted seat and lumber supporting spindles spread the weight and points of contact which increases comfort over longer periods.

The chair is handmade to order from a British hardwood Elm. The wood is finished with a warm coat of hardwax oil. Grain pattern and colour may all vary, these are characteristics of working with natural wood.

Sustainability
John Eadon ensures that he sources all materials and components from reputable and trustworthy UK companies that recognisably perform their own ethical and social checks. All of the company’s products are manufactured, assembled, and distributed in the UK.

The studio has a large water butt that collects excess rainwater which is used for all steam bending, and other various jobs such as cleaning and refilling the dog bowl. All of the timber used for John Eadon products is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC), or Grown In Britain (GIB). This ensures that the materials are collected from local, well-managed, and sustainable sources.

Each product is designed to utilise as many parts as possible of the supplied wood, so there is minimal wastage in the entire process. Kiln dried offcuts are collected for use in biomass burners as renewable energy resources. Sawdust and wood chippings are composted, and everything else that is used is recycled at the end of its time. All glues and finishes used are biodegradable and environmentally friendly.

If the product should ever reach the end of its life, its raw materials can be recycled into more timber products, or simply composted. However, each product can be repaired and refurbished by John Eadon upon request.
