Description

Due to the widespread consumption of orange juice, orange peel is one of Caracara Collective’s main ingredients. Around 16 million tons of orange peel is produced every year from the juice industry. They collect the peel from the juice machines of local supermarkets. With their binders made of nature’s starches and resins, almost any type of organic waste can be turned into functional products.

It takes around 20 squeezed oranges to create one lampshade. In other words, each lampshade is the by-product of someone drinking two litres of juice. In addition to the lampshade, this kit includes an E14 bulb fitting, a wooden lampshade holder disc, 1.5m black cotton cable and cable clamps. Each lampshade is available as a pendant.

The bulb is not included. An E14 LED bulb is advised - they are long-lasting, energy-efficient and fully recyclable. They also generate no heat, making them safe to use with the biomaterial.

All lampshades are handmade from 100% natural ingredients, and are safe for the environment and for us humans. They are not suitable for outdoors or humid environments.

Please note that colour and size may vary slightly depending on each batch of biowaste.

Sustainability
Caracara Collective strives to make everything themselves, without having to outsource. They aim to step away from contributing to the harmful environmental impacts caused by toxic materials, irresponsible use of natural resources, and international shipping of raw ingredients, in order to contribute to a circular economy. For example, their lampshades are handmade in their workshop, and the raw ingredients are sourced locally. These lampshades are pressed by hand without the use of heat, and are made to order to eliminate overproduction. The biomaterial offcuts that result from trimming and sanding the lampshades are later turned into new products. At the end of their lives, these lampshades can be composted.

The primary raw materials that Caracara Collective use are orange peel (leftover from the local supermarket’s juice machines), pine needles (fallen from discarded Christmas trees left outside after the Holidays), reed (washed up on lake shores), water, mycelium (mushroom composites), and reclaimed wood collected from a workshop 10km away. All of these are considered a waste stream, or a natural by-product. They also use flour and binding agents which are compostable and biodegradable, along with the rest of their materials. These products’ lives are completely circular. All of these ingredients are collected locally in Helsinki, within a 70km radius of the studio. Everything in production happens at their studio in Lauttasaari, Helsinki.

Caracara Collective have ongoing collaborations with Biohm, a research and development led company devoted to creating a healthier and more sustainable built environment, Mandin, an international art and design collective, and Kääpä Biotech, a biotechnology company committed to healthier humans and ecosystems.
